5/3/2010 - Immigration attorney John Willshire Carrera of Greater Boston Legal Services describes how life has been improving for the Maya K’iche community in New Bedford, as they slowly become more intigrated into society. About half of the workers detained in the 2007 raid of the Michael Bianco, Inc. factory were Maya K’iche, indigenous Guatemalans who were victims of genocide and persecution in their native country. Martinez, an immigrant advocate in southeastern Massachusetts, has worked at the Women’s Center as a multilingual domestic violence and sexual assault counselor since 2006.
